Gay registered social worker and psychotherapist, Liam McElheron, provides LGTQ+ psychotherapy and counselling in Toronto, Ontario

Do you feel stuck? Like nothing you do really changes how you’re feeling? Maybe you’re using substances or other coping strategies that aren’t working anymore. Maybe you struggle with feeling like you’re not good enough, or that something is wrong with you. Or perhaps you've experienced trauma, loss, or something else that feels stressful and overwhelming.

I get it. I’m a gay man who’s been through therapy and recovery himself. I understand the challenges that we’ve faced and continue to deal with. I’m a registered social worker, psychotherapist trained in a number of effective therapies that I integrate based on your situation. My goal is to help you feel safe and understood as you work through your concerns.

I can help you with depression, anxiety, trauma, addictions, relationship issues, work stress, self esteem, grief, and other life stresses. I use techniques mainly from EFT, CBT, DBT, and mindfulness. My therapy approach is trauma-informed, strengths-based, and non-judgmental. To discuss working together, you can book a free 15-minute consultation on my website or through email or phone. I look forward to hearing from you.

trauma-informed therapy

Practicing trauma-informed therapy means that I am aware that many people who seek therapy have experienced some sort of trauma in their lives, from big, life-altering events, to more persistent patterns of neglect or mistreatment.

All types of trauma disrupt our lives and the way that we relate to ourselves and to others, and so I am very mindful of this when working with you, and look for ways to ease the suffering that trauma creates in your life — at a pace that feels safe for you.

Strengths-based therapy

Working from a strengths-based approach means that I acknowledge the whole person in therapy, not just your “symptoms.” I acknowledge that, while you may come in with things that you want to change about your life, you also come with strengths, assets, and things that you are already doing to feel better. I make sure to acknowledge and emphasize these strengths in session to help you make the most of them.

NON-JUDGMENT

Coming from a place of non-judgement means that I accept you as you are, and do not judge any of the struggles that you discuss with me. This principle comes from personal experience, as well as mindfulness teachings that guide us to make space for all aspects of our experience — the “good” and the “bad”, wanted and unwanted. Cultivating acceptance of your struggles is often the first step forward in changing them.
